In his Supplementary Budget Statement of 07 April, 2009 the Minister for Finance announced the introduction of a Shorter Working Year Scheme which will allow eligible employees in the Civil and Public Sector to make application for special leave up to a period of 13 weeks in the year.
Under the terms of this Scheme, special leave can be taken as a period of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 13 consecutive weeks. The leave can be taken as one continuous period, or as a maximum of 3 separate periods, each consisting of not less than 2 weeks and not exceeding 13 weeks in total. This scheme supersedes the Term Time Scheme, except for those grades exempted under Section 5 of the 2009 Employment Control Framework for the Health Sector 2009, who may continue to avail of the existing term time scheme (see HSE HR Circular 023 2015 for further detail).
The period of leave shall be unpaid special leave.
