Bowel screening - Bowel cancer

In Ireland, everyone age 57 to 71 can get free bowel screening.

You can get free bowel screening through the national bowel screening programme - BowelScreen to:

  • stop you from getting bowel cancer
  • find bowel cancer

You collect a sample of poo at home using a BowelScreen home test kit. Then you send it back to us for testing.

This is to find tiny traces of blood in your poo, which can be a sign of:

  • bowel polyps (growths) that can turn into cancer over time
  • cancer at an early stage before you notice symptoms

Finding cancer early means it’s often easier to treat.

Non-urgent advice: Contact your GP if:

Do not wait for your next bowel screening test.
