Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore Launches New Patient Information Leaflets for patients attending radiology appointments
Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore (MRHT) is today launching a series of new information leaflets designed to inform patients, carers, and comforters about the benefits and risks associated with medical exposure to ionising radiation. This initiative aligns with national regulations and reflects the hospital’s commitment to transparency, education, and continuous quality improvement.
The Radiology Department at MRHT was recently awarded the prestigious EuroSafe Imaging 5-star Premium rating by the European Society of Radiology - highlighting the department’s commitment to excellence in radiation safety, quality patient care, and innovation in radiological practices.
The new materials provide clear, accessible information on radiation safety, helping patients understand the purpose of their imaging procedures, the associated risks, and the expected benefits. They also support carers and comforters by outlining their role and the safety measures in place to protect them.
“This initiative is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to patient-centred care,” said Brian Cosgrave, Radiography Services Manager at MRHT. “By providing timely and relevant information, we empower patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare and ensure compliance with national standards.”
HIQA’s inspections have highlighted the importance of effective communication and documentation in the justification of medical exposures. The hospital’s new leaflets directly address these requirements, ensuring that referrers and practitioners meet their obligations.

Louisea Burke, General Manager at MRHT said, “The launch of these leaflets is part of a broader quality improvement programme at the hospital, which includes staff training, policy updates, and enhanced patient engagement strategies. It also follows recent HIQA inspections that praised the hospital’s efforts in radiation safety and governance.”
Local residents and patients can expect to see the leaflets available in the Radiology Department and waiting areas throughout the hospital. They are also available to view online here. The initiative is being welcomed as a positive development in healthcare communication and patient safety in the Midlands region.
