Greener Models of Healthcare

The HSE aims to safely deliver medical care and medicines with a reduced carbon footprint. Changing how we deliver care and collaborating with patients, suppliers, and partners will help us achieve this.

The HSE is committed to reducing emissions and supports Sláintecare Reform Programme priorities. These include:

  • digital healthcare
  • social prescribing (non-clinical community supports)
  • patient care closer to home
  • disease prevention
  • patient education

The HSE is currently developing a framework for greener models of healthcare implementation plan. The framework will set out how to reduce the environmental impact of the delivery of models of care, pharmaceutical products and various services used, while continuing to prioritise patient safety, prevention and population health.

Work is already underway to make our care sustainable across many of our healthcare specialties. Some of these include:- HSE theatres, Emergency departments, cancer services,  laboratories, radiology, General Practice, HSE Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control teams and across Electronic health initiatives
