Brief Description
In this module we introduce dementia and its various sub-types and focus on the basic processes of cognition. Students will develop an understanding of the assessment diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment and dementia.
Specific topics include:
- Risk factors and prevention of dementia;
- Language versus memory in assessment;
- Dementia sub-types;
- Diagnosing and disclosing diagnoses;
- Treatment of memory impairment and non-cognitive symptoms of dementia.
This is a blended learning module, including online lectures and readings, as well as 4 contact days of workshops with experienced lecturer-practitioners in UCC.
This module includes "brain health" as part of the core curriculum. This includes a 1-hour in-class lecture on cognitive reserve and brain reserve, 1-hour online lecture on dementia risk factors and prevention, guided online resources including the dementia pathways website and "brain health" lecture slides, and further recommended readings associated with the taught content (online resources and additional readings - approx additional 3 hours).
