Role of HSCPs in Dementia Care

Dietitian

  • Support a person living with dementia to assess their nutritional needs and their diet.
  • Support a person living with dementia to help manage their weight, muscle or nutrient losses.
  • Provide a person living with dementia with advice on overcoming challenges of altered dietary intake.
  • Guide and support family members and carers to help the person living with dementia to enjoy their mealtimes.

Occupational therapist

  • Support a person living with dementia to continue to perform their day to day tasks.
  • Provide a person living with dementia guidance around driving and work.
  • Teach a person living with dementia the skills and strategies to enhance memory function.
  • Advise a person living with dementia on home adaptations and equipment to improve safety and functioning.
  • Support a person living with dementia to identify activities and local resources to promote well-being and social interaction

Speech and language therapist

  • Support a person living with dementia to help them to express their wishes and to continue to make decisions for themselves.
  • Support a person living with dementia with communication skills to improve their quality of life.
  • Support a person living with dementia to manage difficulties with eating, drinking and swallowing.
  • Support a person  living with dementia to reduce their risk of chest infections.

Psychologist

  • Support a person living with dementia with the management of behavioural and emotional changes.
  • Support a person living with dementia to identify other reasons for memory difficulties such as delirium and depression.
  • Provide a person living with dementia education on their diagnosis and therapeutic supports for them and their families.
  • Support a person living with dementia with memory focused therapy such as reminiscence therapy

Social workers

  • Support a person living with dementia and their family with the emotional impact of dementia.
  • Provide the person living with dementia with information on dementia and coping strategies.
  • Support a person living with dementia on how to coordinate community services, including day centres, respite and meal services.
  • Provide a person living with dementia with advice and information on social welfare and legal issues.
