About Long-term health conditions
A long-term health condition is one which can be treated and managed but usually not cured. Most long-term health conditions are not contagious.
In Ireland, 49% of Irish people over 50 years have at least one long-term health condition. 65% of adults over 65 years have two or more long-term health conditions.
Some examples of long-term health conditions include:
- Diabetes
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Heart conditions
- Stroke
- Asthma
- Chronic kidney disease
- Vascular (circulatory) disease
- Arthritis
- Degenerative eye disease (eg diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration)
- Fibromyalgia
- Parkinson’s disease
- Crohn’s disease/ Colitis
- Chronic pain
- Endometriosis
- Epilepsy
- Depression
- Multiple sclerosis
- High blood pressure
