This might include difficulties in at least two of the following areas: speech and language; motor skills; social interaction; making friends and managing feelings; learning new tasks.

Referrals are accepted for children living across the Dublin South Local Health Office area who are not accessing/eligible for another service. Queries regarding the appropriateness of referrals are welcome and appreciated.

Children are seen for intervention until their 6th birthday.

What do we do?

The Early Intervention Team offers assessment and support services. We work collaboratively with others involved in supporting the child’s development including families, teachers, other relevant clinician’s and members of the child's wider support system.  We offer a wide range of supports and services to the children and families attending the service. These inputs may include:

  •  Multidisciplinary team assessments of children and families strengths and needs
  • Individual intervention
  • Group interventions
  • Referral to Primary Care service as indicated for intervention
  • Parent Programmes (e.g. EarlyBird, Hanen ‘More Than Words’ Hanen ‘Talkability’, and Parents Plus)
  • ‘Supporting Your Child’ series of talks

As well as providing appointments at our clinic, we may also offer home or school based sessions depending on a child and family's particular needs. Where a child is attending another health or education service, we may work together with these agencies in planning supports for the child.

How to make a referral?

A referral to the Early Intervention Team can be made by your GP, physiotherapist, speech therapist, public health nurse, occupational therapist, social worker or any other health care professional. Your child must be under 5 years old at the time of referral.
