Infant & Child Feeding

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has major health and nutritional benefits for mothers and babies. The Department of Health and Children recommends that mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first 6 months and after that combine breastfeeding with solid foods until 2 years old or older. This is to make the most of the benefits of breastfeeding to mother and baby and is in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF recommendations

Weaning

What is it?
Weaning is the progression from breast or formula milk to a full mixed diet

When to start?

The recommendations for the age of weaning are the same for both breast fed and formula fed infants (FSAI 2012). Weaning should begin close to 6 months (26 weeks) of age.

It is really important that solid food is not given to babies before they are 17 weeks of age

At the weaning class we will discuss the importance of not weaning too early or indeed too late.

We will show you samples of suitable first foods and texture and sample foods for the different stages until the child is 12 months.
We will also give you some sample recipes to get you started.
