COVID Tracker Ireland app one of Linux Foundation Public Health's first open source projects

HSE Press Release: Monday, 20th July 2020

The HSE is delighted to announce today, (Monday 20th July 2020) that the COVID Tracker Ireland app has been taken on as one of the first two open source projects by the newly established Linux Foundation Public Health initiative in a global effort to help suppress the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is a significant endorsement of the work carried out by the team behind the COVID Tracker Ireland App which has been a collaboration between Irish Government, HSE, NearForm and Science Foundation Ireland.

“We are pleased to contribute COVID Green, the open source code behind Ireland’s COVID Tracker app, to Linux Foundation Public Health,” said Fran Thompson, Chief Information Officer of the HSE. “This app is a great demonstration of innovation within the Irish health sector combined with the IT capabilities of the Irish software industry. We’re immensely proud of the work we’ve undertaken in partnership with NearForm in responding to the pandemic. We are looking forward to collaborating with other public health authorities around the world via Linux Foundation Public Health to assist them in quickly replicating our approach while learning from their experiences.”

Throughout the development of this project the team has been part of a global effort, learning from the work of teams in Germany and Switzerland and contributing to projects throughout Europe. Making the code available through Linux Foundation Public Health means that the Irish team will be able to benefit from work that other countries and states in the US do using our code to continue to improve the Covid Tracker Ireland app.

The COVID Tracker Ireland code will be made available under the project name COVID Green. The repository will be managed by the developers NearForm.
