How to get fertility tests or treatment
Your GP or consultant may refer you to a fertility hub if you have either:
- problems getting pregnant
- a health condition that affects fertility
When to contact your GP about fertility problems
If you are a woman, you must:
- be under age 43
- have a BMI of 18.5 to 35
If you are a man, you must be under age 60.
You must meet different criteria for IVF or other specialist treatment.
Free treatment through a regional fertility hub is not means tested. We will not ask you about your income.
What to expect at a regional fertility hub
If your GP does not refer you
Your GP or consultant cannot refer you if you do not meet the criteria. They can talk to you about other options.
If you think you meet the criteria, you can ask another GP for a second opinion.
Some people pay for private fertility tests or treatment.
Possible costs
Fertility tests, appointments and treatment through a regional fertility hub are free of charge.
You may need to pay for care outside of the fertility hubs such as:
- medicines
- GP visits
- GP tests
- any private tests or treatment
Tax relief and refunds
The Drugs Payment Scheme can help with the cost of approved prescribed medicines. Having a DPS card means you pay a maximum of €80 for approved medicines in a calendar month.
You can claim tax relief on certain medical expenses.
