The Department of Nephrology at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) provides a comprehensive programme in nephrology (the study of kidney disease) to a catchment population of almost 400, 000 in the Midwest region of Ireland. Our team provides expertise in a broad range of areas including kidney failure, dialysis, and kidney transplantation. The department is staffed by 3 Consultant Nephrologists (kidney specialists) with diverse and overlapping clinical interests. Recruitment of a 4th Nephrologist is currently underway to further enhance the clinical, educational and research programmes. Our aim is to deliver excellence in clinical care, education and research in order to improve the outcomes and quality of life for our patients.
Department of Renal Medicine Services
Inpatient services are provided at the University Hospital Limerick that caters for patients undergoing dialysis treatment or recipients of a kidney transplant. The range of services include: acute dialysis, continuous hemofiltration (CVVH), extracorporeal hemofiltration for drug and chemical intoxication, kidney biopsy, diagnosis and management of resistant hypertension and the management of all forms of chronic kidney disease.
Our team manages an in-centre haemodialysis service based at UHL, which is one of the busiest in the country. We also manage a satellite haemodialysis centre just minutes from the main campus in partnership with Fresenius Healthcare. Our team of nursing staff, physicians and allied health professional ensures that patient welfare is their top priority. The Department provides specialist nephrology clinics in General Nephrology and Peritoneal Dialysis and new sub-specialist clinics are to be introduced as part of an overall expansion of our programme.
Outpatient Clinic Times
New referrals for The Department of Renal Medicine are accepted from internal referrals at University Hospital Limerick, Gps, Regional and National Centres. Submitted letters are assessed by the Consultant and an appropriate appointment will be forwarded directly to the patient.
