The Mid Western Hospital Group provides acute hospital services in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. The Hospitals within the Group are:

The population of the Mid-West region is 361,028 people (Census 2006).

 

Profile of Mid Western Regional Hospitals, Limerick

The current approved WTE complement for the hospitals 2,397.06

Comprising Mid-Western Regional Hospital, Dooradoyle, Limerick, Mid-Western Regional Orthopaedic Hospital, Croom, Co. Limerick, Mid-Western Regional Maternity Hospital, Ennis Road, Limerick

Mid-Western Regional Hospital, Dooradoyleprovides acute in-patient services in Medicine, Surgery, I.C.U, C.C.U and Psychiatry for the local catchment area (Limerick city and county, Clare and Tipperary N.R).  In addition, regional in-patient services are provided for a range of specialities such as Paediatrics, E.N.T, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Oncology, including Radiotherapy, Haematology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  Support services include Radiology, Pathology, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Social Work and Pharmacy.

Day care is provided in the surgical specialities and an Acute Medical Assessment Unit is in place at the hospital to treat medical patients without the need to admit them to hospital.

A full range of out-patient services is provided in each of the above specialities.  In addition, out-patient clinics are also provided in Neurology, STD/GUM and Orthodontics.

The total bed complement in Dooradoyle is 435 in-patient beds and 102 day beds as follows:

The Mid-Western Regional Maternity Hospital has 80 Obstetric beds and 19 Neo Natal cots.  It is the only maternity hospital in the Mid-Western area and is categorised as a level three unit capable of providing clinical services to high risk women and their infants. 

The medium term proposal is to transfer services from the Regional Maternity Hospital site to the Mid Western Regional Hospital site, where access to clinical support services is guaranteed.  This has been identified as one of the top priorities in the acute hospital area.

The Mid Western Orthopaedic Hospital has a bed complement of 67 beds with 10 day case beds and services include radiology, physiotherapy (with a hydrotherapy pool) and out-patient facilities.

Profile St. John’s Hospital based in the city centre is an acute general Public Voluntary Hospital, directly funded by the Health Service Executive through the National Hospital’s Office.

St. John’s Hospital has an approved in-patient bed complement of 93 beds, as follows.

Services Provided

·        A range of in-patient and out-patient services including: Breast Surgery, General Surgery, General Medicine, Gynaecology,  Intensive Care / Coronary Care Unit, Gynaecology, Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Gastroenterology, Pain Management, Accident & Emergency services (including a Minor Injuries Clinic) on an 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. (Mon to Fri).  Physiotherapy, Clinical Nurse Specialist services in Continence Care, Dietetics, Respiratory Care, Tissue Viability, Pain Management, Infection Control & Prevention and Health Promotion.

·        St. John’s Hospital is actively participating in the RE-configuration of acute hospital services project in the Mid-West Region

Profile Ennis General Hospital

This 80 bed hospital is undergoing reconfiguration within the Mid West Region with all acute inpatient and elective surgical services transferred to Mid Western Regional Hospital Limerick.

This new role will include the development of new Outpatient and Day Surgical Services including Maxillofacial , ENT , Orthopaedics etc.

It provides an Accident and Emergency Department from 8am to 8pm.

Since the closure of 24 hours A & E Services the hospital has developed an Acute Medical  Unit providing GPs with direct referral facilities.

The hospital is currently developing a new Endoscopy Suite and Day Ward facility.  The Endoscopy Suite will be contained wholly within the existing building which will be modified to accommodate new unit.

Profile Nenagh General Hospital

This hospital is undergoing reconfiguration within the Mid West Region with all acute inpatient and elective surgical services transferred to Mid Western Regional Hospital Limerick.

Current services:

·                    Acute Medical Unit

As part of the reconfiguration process, a new acute medical unit has been developed on site and has become operational since May 2009.  This is a Value For Money initiative, which will see, earlier processing of patients, referred for admission, from the GP community

·                    Planned additional services

In June 2009, our CT department opened with regard to inpatient service delivery due to the creative redeployment of staff within the hospital.  Additional staff are required to fully roll out the service to facilitate day case and outpatient requirements.

·                    Capital Developments

Capital project submissions totalling approximately €15m have been submitted to the NHO Capital Steering Committee which will provide an Endoscopy Suite and a new Theatre Suite at the Nenagh Hospital.  This will facilitate the development of endoscopy and day surgical services in line with reconfiguration into the future.
