The HSE’s New Haughton Hospital greeted a special guest on Friday last.
Having played in Wexford’s National Opera House on Thursday evening and whilst on their way next day to another concert in Co. Kerry, country music super-star Nathan Carter and some of his band made a quick stop in New Ross.
Mary Sweeney (Clinical Nurse Manager, New Haughton Day Care Centre) revealed that the flying visit by the celebrity was due. Along with Director of Nursing Margaret Nowlan O’ Neill and fellow staff, they made sure residents of the hospital and attendees of its day centre were gathered in the main foyer for the impromptu sing-along.
Nathan Carter duly arrived, to great excitement.
Amid greetings ahead of singing some songs, Nathan met 97 year old local lady Moira Murphy. Moira attends the New Haughton Day Care Centre. Upon learning that Moira herself was a good singer, Nathan was delighted when she obliged with a verse of “Slaney Valley” – a song made famous by the late Larry Cunningham.
Nathan then went to the hospital piano, to play a tune. Nathan then followed with his rendition of “The Leaving of Liverpool”, with everyone joining in on the chorus.
All present were thrilled when the guitar and fiddle struck up the introduction to the next song, Nathan Carter’s massive hit “Wagon Wheel”.
As he sang, Nathan was delighted to be joined in dancing along to it by the wonderful Moira Murphy!
In wishing everyone a happy Christmas, Nathan Carter then beautifully sang “Silent Night” and bade goodbye.
