HSE South West has launched an information video to prevent wound infections after surgery.

Suds Before Surgery gives simple instructions on how to correctly wash before any surgery. Wound infections after surgery can affect as many as one-in-11 patients, potentially leading to longer hospital stays and slower wound healing.

Sinéad Horgan, Director of Nursing, Office of the Regional Director of Nursing and Midwifery, HSE South West said:

“We’ve heard from patients that they want to know how to prevent wound infections before surgery. To help, we’ve made a short video with tips on how to wash before your surgery.”

Suds Before Surgery (video), available on the HSE South West YouTube channel has important advice for patients on how to prepare for a surgery, including showering to remove any germs from the skin, which reduces the chance of an infection.

Sinéad Horgan added: “Many germs (bacteria) live in and on our bodies, and all around us. They can enter a cut which a surgeon makes on the skin. You can play an important role by making sure your skin is clean, as removing these germs before surgery will help protect you from wound infections.”

As well as advice on the best way to shower before surgery, the video contains other advice such as:

  • Remove nail varnish or false nails
  • Avoid body waxing or shaving for at least three days before surgery
  • Sleep in clean night clothes and bed linen the night before surgery
  • Do not allow pets to sleep on your clean bed the night before surgery

The video was produced by nursing staff at HSE South West and funded by the Spark Innovation Fund.
