Ceol, craic and CPR training are all on offer at the free Men’s Health in the Community event at the CYMS Hall in Killorglin on Wednesday, June 11, from 10am to 2pm. It’s open to all men and anyone who cares about men’s health.
The event is part of Men's Health Week 2025 (June 9 - 15) and this year’s theme is ‘Shoulder-to-Shoulder: Connecting for Health’.
This annual community event brings together a wide range of HSE South West health professionals to offer advice - including physiotherapists, dieticians, public health nurses, health promotion officers and occupational therapists. Local community groups such as the South Kerry Development Partnership and Local Link Kerry will also be there to connect with attendees. The day will include a performance from the Killorglin Men’s Social Club Choir.
What’s on offer:
- Free blood pressure checks
- Free one hour CPR and Defib workshops (pre-booking is essential on 066 976 2933; sessions available at 10.30am and 12.30pm)
- Free health checks at three local pharmacies in Killorglin throughout the week - Mulvihill's Pharmacy, Haven Pharmacy O'Sullivan's and Laune Pharmacy
Project lead Michelle Foley, Health Promotion and Improvement Officer with HSE South West, said:
“This is a wonderful opportunity for men in Kerry to meet with a range of health and community professionals in a one-stop-shop. The focus is health awareness, prevention and increasing access to services.
“I’d encourage men of all ages, and those who care about them, to come along and learn more about the health issues men face. I’m really looking forward to chatting with everyone and planning future programmes.
“Taking part in a community men’s health event isn’t just about checking in on your well-being - which is very important - it’s also about supporting each other, sharing skills and caring for one another. I encourage men of all ages to attend this event and let this be your day to start looking after your health and wellbeing. Together, we can build a healthier future.”
DJ Moran, Rural Men’s Outreach Officer with South Kerry Development Partnership, highlighted the importance of connection:
“South Kerry has a high population of elderly men living in rural isolated areas. Our rural men’s group meets regularly and goes on day trips to fight that isolation. Social connection is a huge part of staying healthy. This day in Killorglin will be great for linking up with health supports and others in the community.
“Everyone is welcome. Whether you’re coming for a health check, a chat, or just to see what it’s all about, this event is a great step toward better health and stronger community ties.”
The free community event and health checks are organised by the Health Promotion and Improvement Department of HSE South West; in partnership with Enhanced Community Care, Public Health Nursing, Community Work, South Kerry Development Partnership CLG, Killorglin Family Resource Centre, Social Prescribers and the Men’s Social Club in Killorglin.
