Insulin Initiation Clinic - Every Monday
This Clinic is for patients that have committed to start insulin therapy as a result of the decision taken at the clinics. Attended by the Diabetes Nurse Specialist with the insulin types directed by Dr Durkan.
Emergency Referral Service from GP’s - Every Tuesday
Dr Durkan provides an Emergency Referral Service from GP’s. If a GP has a concern about somebody that is newly diagnosed this walk-in service is provided where Dr Durkan sees the person who is recently diagnosed, prescribes treatment and then books them into the clinic.
Fast Track Diabetes Clinic - Every Wednesday Morning
A Fast Track Diabetes Clinic is provided at Portiuncula Hospital on a Wednesday morning. This clinic is led by Dr. Durkan and the Diabetes Nurse Specialist. A team member either an SHO/Intern/Registrar on a rotating basis is also committed to this service. This is to allow all patients in whom there has been any adjustment in insulin or medications to be seen within the following two weeks to look at all their sugar profiles and make sure that they are at their goal rather than waiting until nine months later. The Fast Track Clinic sees about 20 patients at a time.
Dedicated Lipid Clinic - Every Wednesday Afternoon
A dedicated Lipid Clinic service is provided at Portiuncula Hospital. This service is provided for Lipid Disorders of Diabetes and for Primary Lipid Disorders. A Familial Lipid Service and Paediatric Lipids Disorders are provided as part of this service. This is run by Dr. Durkan's Team including the Registrar, the SHO, an Intern and Dr. Durkan. The Lipid Clinic sees about 30 patients per clinic.
Paediatric Adolescent Clinic - Wednesday Afternoon once every three months
Dr. Durkan provides a Paediatric Adolescent Clinic in conjunction with the Paediatricians and it is Consultant-led only and supported by the Diabetes Nurse Specialist. Dr. Durkan sees the paediatric adolescents that she is transiting in terms of care and usually going from a Novo Mix Regimen to Multiple Daily Injections. Dr. Durkan reviews the new type I diabetes patients, i.e. children at any age group that have been just diagnosed within the preceding three months, at this clinic.
Dedicated Diabetes Clinic - Thursday Afternoons twice per month
A Dedicated Diabetes Clinic is provided at Portiuncula Hospital. This service usually sees 30 to 35 patients per clinic minimally. On the alternate two Thursday afternoons, Dr. Durkan attends a Consultant operated Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Clinic that is at UCHG and a Dedicated Endocrine Clinic that is just for consultant referrals at Roscommon Hospital.
Diabetes Clinic - Two Fridays per month
Diabetes Clinics are provided on two Fridays per month. These clinics each see between 30 and 40 patients.
Medical Clinic - One Friday per month
One Friday per month there is a Medical Clinic provided and sees usually around 40 patients per clinic.
Endocrine Clinic - One Friday per month
An Endocrine Clinic is provided one Friday per month and sees between 50 and 60 patients.
Pregnancy Clinic - Every Friday Morning
A Pregnancy Clinic is provided every Friday morning at Portiuncula Hospital. This is a Consultant led service. Most of the patients are diabetes in pregnancy either newly or gestational and this service is run in collaboration with the maternity department.

Team providing the service:
The Team includes 1 Registrar, 1 SHO and 2 Interns plus a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The Team have experience in general medicine and would also have sub-speciality experience in the field of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism.

Dr. Durkan provides an inpatient service at Portiuncula Hospital. Rounds are carried out twice per day. Dr. Durkan provides dedicated team teaching purely for the team usually about one hour twice per week (two hours per week).
Dr. Durkan is the Chairperson of the Education Committee at Portiuncula Hospital. She is actively engaged in teaching at the hospital. Aside from two dedicated hours for team teaching, she provides general teaching every Tuesday afternoon for the medical staff, i.e., the interns, SHO’s and Registrars. Every Wednesday morning Dr. Durkan provides dedicated intern and medical student teaching. In addition, two Thursdays per month she does journal club review and journal club teaching and is involved in the communal medical ground rounds on a Friday morning.
