Hospital Inpatient Enquiry (HIPE) Department

Description:

The Hospital Inpatient Enquiry (HIPE) department is located in the Patient Records Building (opposite Emergency Department entrance).

Function:

The main role of the HIPE department involves the correlation and collection of data on discharged patients and the input of this data onto the national HIPE database.

Each diagnoses and procedure (up to 20) is assigned a code using the ICD-10-AM. The coding staff are trained in using the ICD-10-AM by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). Each month the coded data is exported to the ESRI, who have been contracted by the Department of Health and Children (DoH&C) to monitor and maintain the national database. This national database allows for the DoH&C to compare and contrast hospital activity and costs. From the data returned, the DoH&C can assess the efficiency of each participating hospital

As all inpatient and daycase data is input onto this database, it is a valuable source of information on hospital activity which can be used for management and for clinical research purposes. We have achieved 100% completed coding each year since 1997 – 2007 being the latest completed data set.

Services Provided:

The HIPE data can be accessed and used by management as a tool to assess activity levels, compare performance indicators and apply speciality costs etc., and by clinical staff for research purposes.
