Infection Control

The duties and responsibilities of the Clinical Nurse Specialists in Infection Control encompass many areas. Key Components being:  Clinical, Patient-Centred, Education and Training, Research and Audit and Consultancy.

The Infection Control Nurse Specialists in PHB act as Change agents, Collaborators, Clinical leaders, Role models & Patient advocates. We advise and support nursing personnel and other hospital staff in the implementation of agreed policies and procedures in their specific areas.

We liaise with other Infection Control Nurses Specialists and Microbiologist seeking information and guidance on infection control issues.

We provide an ongoing educational resource to meet the identified needs of staff, we liaise with training and academic departments to deliver educational programmers within the Hospital. We keep abreast with recent advances by reading current literature, attending appropriate seminars, meetings and exhibitions.

As CNSs in Infection Control, we promote nursing research and clinical audit. We initiate & participate in the evaluation and trials of new

techniques, equipment and materials. We participate in critical appraisal and evaluation of control of infection measures by means of inspection, audit and surveillance.

We interact on an ongoing daily basis with Nursing, Medical, Catering, Cleaning, Care attendants, Porters, Laboratory, Risk Advisor, Physiotherapists, Radiotherapists, Occupational Health, Cardiac technicians, Stores Department, Technical Services, Administration and

Nursing Practice Development Unit.

Our mission is to promote a healthy and safe environment by preventing transmission of infectious agents among patients, staff, visiting personnel, and others associated with Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe.

We measure, validate, interpret and respond to data relevant to healthcare outcomes, healthcare-associated infections/antimicrobial resistance, and related adverse events, among patients and healthcare personnel with our Infection Control Team and Committee.
 

We investigate and respond to outbreaks and emerging infections and related adverse events among patients, healthcare providers, or associated with the healthcare environment, we detect evaluate monitor and respond to emerging antimicrobial-resistant pathogens and infections with our Infection Control Team, Infection Control Committee and Outbreak committee. 

We evaluate the efficacy of new interventions designed to prevent infections/antimicrobial resistance and related adverse events. We identify effective interventions that prevent healthcare-associated infections/antimicrobial resistance and related adverse events, among patients and healthcare personnel as a committee. We also promote the local implementation of these interventions; and evaluate the impact of their implementation.

We aim to create awareness and knowledge of the role of the Infection Control Practitioner/Infection Control Committee.

We promote good hand hygiene by all staff.
