Laboratory - Portiuncula Hospital

 

Location:

Second Floor in main hospital block. Using the main entrance turn right after reception and take 1st left after the Coffee Shop. Lifts and stairs are located to the right to take you to the second floor.

 

Services provided:

The laboratory provides a comprehensive service in the following specialties:

Biochemistry:

The biochemistry department performs qualitative and quantitative analyses of body fluids, such as blood, urine and spinal fluid (CSF).

Blood Transfusion:

Blood typing, antibody screening and the provision of blood and blood products for transfusion to patients. Haemovigilance to ensure safe and effective use of blood and blood products.

Haematology:

The study of the morphology/physiology of blood to identify abnormalities and monitor disease. The department is also involved in screening patients for bleeding /clotting disorders and monitoring anticoagulation therapy

Histology:

The microscopic study of tissues samples obtained from surgical operations and autopsies.

Microbiology:

Investigation and treatment of illnesses/diseases caused by micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi.

Phlebotomy:

Obtaining blood samples from patients for laboratory investigations.

The laboratory is currently enganged in a laboratory accreditation process.

 

Access to Services:

All laboratory requests must be initiated by medical staff.

 

The Laboratory at Portiuncula Hospital provides comprehensive services for:

  • In-patients, out-patients and day-care patients at Portiuncula Hospital
  • Psychiatric patients located at St. Bridgets Hospital Ballinasloe
  • General Practitioners (HSE West & HSE Midland Area)
  • Consultant private rooms
  • Nursing homes
  • Remote access via computer to laboratory results from all wards and out-patient clinics. The laboratory provides electronic reporting to General Practitioners via the Healthlink network.

The laboratory provides a routine service Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5.30pm and a 24hr emergency on-call service.

Laboratory Function:

The laboratory department conducts diagnostic investigations of blood, tissue and other body fluids. In association with other healthcare professionals the laboratory service helps to diagnose illnesses, monitor treatment and control diseases.
