Nurse Practice Development Unit: Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe

The role/function of the Nursing Practice Development Unit is to facilitate a continuous process of improvement in the delivery of health care services that are designed to promote increased effectiveness in patient-centred care.

By learning from practice, emphasis is placed on transforming the culture and context of care through systematic approaches.   Continuous evaluation, development, implementation and monitoring of nursing practice is promoted in all areas of the hospital, enabling an awareness of quality agendas and promoting the delivery of the highest standard of patient focused care.   Sharing of information enables facilitation of change, moving towards evidence based practice and improved standards of nursing care.   Nursing policy and guidelines are developed in collaboration with clinical staff and circulated to each clinical area.              

Support is provided to nurses in Portiuncula Hospital on practice issues enhancing their personal and professional development.   By consulting with the relevant stakeholders practice development needs are identified on a continuous basis.   Specific project work and practice initiatives are implemented.   The unit is responsible for ensuring optimal clinical learning environments for nursing students and also appropriate student allocations.   Overseas nurses and nurses engaged in Return to Practice Programmes are facilitated with clinical placements.   The co-ordination and management of this and other programmes i.e. Multidisciplinary Orientation Programme, Hospital Life Facilitation Programme for 2nd Level Students is through the Nursing Practice Development Unit.
