National Guideline for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) in HSE Dental and Orthodontic Services

The guideline applies HIQA standards and condenses current knowledge and recommendations for IPC in dental and orthodontic clinics.

 Infection prevention and control is integral to clinical care and how it is provided.  The implementation of this guideline ensures a consistent approach will be applied across all HSE dental and orthodontic settings to;

  • Provide safe and supportive practice
  • Prevent the spread of infection
  • Reassure service users that effective procedures will be used to reduce the risk of harm to those having dental or orthodontic treatment”

A self-audit tool is available to support dental and orthodontic staff carry out an audit that aims to ensure effective compliance with the guideline.  The tool assists in the completion of a quality improvement plan, and a re-audit following actions taken.  A user manual has also been developed to help you complete the audit tool.
