Adult Psychology Service

How do I get referred and what happens next?

Your GP or other health professional may suggest you talk to a psychologist. If you agree they will send us your details. You may also contact us directly to discuss this. We may then contact you to confirm that you would like to attend and perhaps, if it suits, have a short telephone conversation with you about your difficulties.

We may suggest that you attend one of our courses (for example our Stress Control course or Living Well Group). You may be offered an appointment for an individual consultation meeting - unless you or we feel that this is not indicated at that time (e.g. sometimes the Stress Control course is enough). We will try to ensure that you don't have to wait too long for services from us however it may be that there will be a wait. Where possible you will be offered an appointment in a location close to you.

Your Psychologist will not:

  • Force you to talk about things - you choose what to tell your psychologist.
  • Tell you what you should do.
  • Offer you counselling or suggest other things unless she or he believes that it is the most suitable option for you.

Your Psychologist will:

  • Listen carefully and take your problems seriously.
  • Try and understand you and help you make sense of your difficulties.
  • In most instances keep private what you share.
