Paediatric Assessment Unit

The PAU is a dedicated facility on the hospital's first floor where all acutely ill children, up to 16 years can be treated for urgent illnesses such as high temperatures, chest conditions, infections, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Children presenting to the hospital are registered by clerical staff in ED and then immediately directed to the PAU.

PAU staff assess their order of treatment using the Irish Children's Triage System (ICTS) and then treat all children.

Children in need of emergency treatment or trauma care will continue to be treated in the emergency department (ED).

The Paediatric Assessment Unit's opening times are:

9 am to 9 pm, Monday to Friday and 2 pm to 9 pm, Saturday and Sunday.

Outside of these times, all children will be managed in the ED.
