Orthopaedic Service: University Hospital Waterford

The Orthopaedic Service in University Hospital Waterford and Kilcreene Regional Orthoapedic Hospital includes:

  • 2 Trauma Orthopaedic Wards (Orthopaedic 1 and Orthopaedic 2)
  • An Orthopaedic 6 bedded Day Unit in the Surgical Day Services Unit (SDSU)
  • An Out Patients suite for Fracture and Elective Clinics (OPD1)
  • A planned (elective) orhtopaedic surgery unit in Kilcreene, Kilkenny

The following information will focus on the Trauma Orthopaedic Wards

The Orthopaedic Wards are located on the ground floor of the hospital.

What do we do?
Orthopaedic 1 and Orthopaedic 2 are each 31 bedded wards, which manage all acute Orthopaedic admissions through the Emergency Department at UHW. As the Orthopaedic Trauma Centre for the South East this Service accepts all traumas from the region (St Lukes Hospital Kilkenny, SouthTipperary General Hospital and Wexford General Hospital).

Graduated from Queen's University Belfast in 1976. Obtained FRCSI in 1980. Conferred MD with honours in 1985.  Winner Robert Jones Medal and British Orthopaedic Association prize in 1990. Appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, RVH Belfast in 1989 becoming Trauma Director at the Royal in 1992. Joined the South East Orthopaedic Service in 1999. Currently Clinical Lead for Orthopaedics, UHW and Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital.

Specialist interests include Orthopaedic Trauma, Lower Limb Arthroplasty, Soft tissue knee surgery and Spine surgery.

Chair of Committee for Surgical Affairs and Incoming Lead for Quality Assurance, Joint Committee for Surgical Training, RCSI.

Special Interests: Hand and wrist surgery, and Developmental Dysplasia of Hip for South-East referrals.

Ms May Cleary

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to University Hospital Waterford and Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital

May graduated from Royal College of Surgeons and was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2010, taking up her post in August 2011. She is a fellowship trained lower limb arthroplasty surgeon who also deals with general trauma.

Ms Cleary is the Orthopaedic Lead Clinician for the South/Southwest Hospital group

Special Interests: Hip and knee conditions including primary and revision joint replacement and sports knee injuries.

 

Mr Paul McKenna

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to University Hospital Waterford and Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital

A 2002 graduate of the University College Cork, Paul completed his Higher Specialist Surgical Training on the national Irish training scheme winning the Michael Floyd Medal.  He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2013 and took up the appointment in 2014.  He underwent further specialist fellowship training in Philadelphia at Rothman Institute where he learned techniques in minimally-invasive hip and knee replacement surgery, along with advanced techniques in revision surgery. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University College Cork, is actively involved in the Higher Surgical Training scheme, has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, has written over 10 book chapters and is the editor of a forthcoming orthopaedic textbook on arthroplasty.

Special Interests: Hip and knee arthroplasty, minimally invasive hip and knee replacement surgery, advanced revision surgery techniques.

 

Mr Ruairí Mac Niocaill

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to University Hospital Waterford and Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital

Ruairí graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (2000) with a Gold Medal in Surgery and went on to full time orthopaedic training in 2003. His higher surgical training culminated in the Intercollegiate Fellowship in Trauma Orthopaedics and the Sir Walther Mercer Gold Medal in 2012.  He underwent sub-specialty fellowship training in orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery in Brisbane, Australia. Ruairí was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2014.

Ruairí is active in training and research and is a reviewer for a number of journals.

Special Interests: Foot and ankle surgery, arthroscopy and joint replacement surgery.
