NCCP Urological Cancer Quality and Audit Forum 7th November 2025

The National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) hosted the National Urological Cancer Quality and Audit Forum on 7th November 2025. 

Purpose

The purpose of the forum is to provide an annual multidisciplinary forum for quality and audit for Urological Cancer Services.  It helps identify best practice models and ensure standardisation and service improvement nationally.

Speakers

The Forum was opened by Ms Fiona Bonas, Assistant National Director, National Cancer Control Programme, who highlighted that the Forum this year celebrates achievements in urological cancers.  This included:

  •  Dramatic improvements in prostate cancer survival from an average of 64% for the years 1994-1998 to 94% for years 2019-2022
  •  Development of Monitoring and Evaluating the Stratified Self-Managed Follow-Up (SSMFU) for prostate cancer patients
  •  Development of “Know the signs-penile cancer awareness” campaign
  •  Development of NCRI Report on Urological Cancer in Ireland: Rates and Emerging Trends
  •  Centralisation of Retro Peritoneal Lymph Node Dissection (RPLND) for testicular cancer
  •  Update on the National Cancer Information System (NCIS)
  •  PRAISE-U - Ireland’s part in the EU plan to broaden cancer screening
  •  Standardising the delivery of Intravesical Therapies
  •  Discussion about the Prostate Diagnostic pathway
  •  Bladder Cancer, Gemcitabine & Docetaxel

Mr Paul Sweeney, National Clinical Lead for Urological Cancers and Consultant Urologist at and Mercy University Hospital Cork, speaking at the event, welcomed the opportunity for national multi-disciplinary urological cancer teams to work together to build on local clinical governance arrangements, and develop cohesive national clinical networks for the purpose of clinical audit, sharing of good practice and problem solving.

Speaking at the Forum, Professor Philip Cornford, provided an update on Active Surveillance for prostate cancer. Dr Theresa Redaniel, Head of Research and Analysis, National Cancer Registry Ireland, provided an update on Urological Cancer in Ireland: Rates and Emerging Trends. 

Ms Eileen Nolan, Programme Manager, NCCP noted the excellent attendance from teams across the urological cancer services and thanked everyone involved in the NCCP Urological Cancer Programme for their invaluable contribution.
