The work of the Health Technology Assessment Group (HTAG)
HTAG is a medical technology evaluation group that provides assistance to stakeholders when considering various health technologies and innovation in the medical devices field.
The unit reviews the clinical and cost effectiveness of innovative medical devices. This will inform and support clinical and business decisions relating to the procurement of new medical devices.
Any internal HSE division or representative from industry can apply for a health technology assessment review by HTAG.
Where a mini HTA review is conducted on a topic, HTAG will produce and forward an Advice Note to the applicant and HSE Procurement. Access the HTAG Advice Notes.
When assessing and evaluating a new medical device, HTAG focuses on:
- patient and user safety
- clinical effectiveness
- budget impact
All data and information collected as part of the research process is evaluated and presented in a systematic, unbiased and transparent manner. HTAG integrates clinical expertise within the Irish healthcare system with evidence-based research.
HTAG works closely with the Health Technology Assessment Expert Group (HTAEG), made up of internal and external experts. All work carried out by HTAG will be presented to the Expert Group, who will issue advice based on the research presented.
The HTAG office is based in Limerick and currently sits within the Knowledge Management Division of the HSE's Health and Wellbeing Division.
