Ophthalmology Service in Cavan and Monaghan

Ophthalmology - Eyesight

The Community Ophthalmology service cares for medical conditions of the eye. Children are seen at clinics in St. Davnet’s Monaghan, Virginia Primary Care Unit and Cavan General Hospital. Squint and Amblyopia treatment includes care from both Orthoptist and Ophthalmologist. We provide follow-up treatment for some conditions in the community and some post-operative care.

Services are provided by Community Ophthalmic Physicians and Orthoptists employed by the Health Service Executive and appliances are dispensed by private opticians at a range of locations.

Who can access this service?
We provides ophthalmic treatment and optical appliances free of charge for the following:

  • Children under the age of six years in respect of defects noticed at school health clinics
  • Pupils attending national schools in respect of defects noticed at school health examinations or through their General Practitioner. 

How do I access this service?
A letter of referral should be sent from your GP, Area Medical Officer, your local Public Health Nurse or other professionals.
