MLU Antenatal Care and Education

MLU Antenatal Care

The MLU midwives hold antenatal clinics every morning from Monday to Friday. Each appointment is allocated half an hour and is arranged at a time to suit you. This helps to ensure minimal waiting times.

The MLU midwives also hold antenatal clinics in Monaghan Hospital where clients can attend if this is more convenient. The antenatal clinics provide an opportunity for you to get to know the midwives who will look after you in labour.

Each antenatal visit consists of a blood pressure check, urine test, checking for growth of the baby and general wellbeing. It is also an opportunity for you to talk with your midwife about any concerns that you may be having.

The MLU midwives work in partnership with your GP to provide your antenatal care.

Antenatal Education

Antenatal Education includes all aspects of your pregnancy:

  •  Your antenatal appointments
  •  What to expect during your pregnancy
  •  Prepare you for the delivery of your baby
  •  Tips to help you get into labour
  •  Advice to help you through labour
  •  Postnatal information

We provide antenatal classes in Cavan three times a month and Monaghan once a month. Your midwife will book these classes for you at your booking visit. Unfortunately, these class have been temporarily cancelled due to the pandemic.

During the COVID – 19 pandemic, we have been able to access online antenatal classes within our RCSI group. These free classes are very similar to the face to face classes we would provide but from the comfort of your own home.

The parent education department offers follow-up Q&A’s via video link to provide the face to face connection with a midwife and give mothers and their partners the opportunity to ask questions about their pregnancy, upcoming birth and the preparation of their newborn.
