Liam Hennessy, Mental Health Engagement

Liam Hennessy is Head of Mental Health Engagement in the Mental Health Division. Liam, who has been an intermittent user of mental health services since his late teenage years, took up the post in February, 2016.

Liam’s remit is to lead on the putting in place of structures - including the appointment of Area Leads for Mental Health Engagement - which will ensure that the views and experiences of service users and their supporters are at the heart of the planning and delivery of Irish mental health services.

Liam has previously worked as a teacher, senior civil servant, management consultant and inspector of mental health services. A strong believer in the recovery and wellbeing model, Liam has been a prominent member of a number of mental health consumer groups and is the father of two adult daughters of whom he is very proud.

The Mental Health Engagement Office

The purpose of the Mental Health Engagement Office is to support the Head in developing structures, systems and mechanisms for service user, family member and carer engagement. It has five main functions:

  1. Advice, support and review in relation to the local structures for Service User Family Member and Carer Engagement
  2. Information flow and data collection
  3. Capacity building
  4. Knowledge, Expertise and Research
  5. Working with others to promote to Service User, Family Members and Carers Engagement.

The Head is also supported by the nine Area Leads, each of whom will be a member of the Community Healthcare Organisation (CH0) Area Mental Health Management Team. In line with A Vision for Change the purpose of this post is to consult and present the views of service users, family members and carers through engagement and partnership and to influence decision making at Area Management level. The Area Lead will implement the development of structures that allow for the involvement of service users, family members and carers in the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of mental health services.
