Mental Health Day Hospitals - Dublin South City

A Day Hospital is an alternative to being admitted to hospital and staying there at night.

Who can go to a day hospital?

You can attend a day hospital if you’re currently unwell or if you’re starting a new medication regime.

What happens there?

First, you’ll get a comprehensive assessment followed by ongoing support and education. You will develop your own individual Care Plan with your Key Worker which will be reviewed at regular intervals. Your prescribed treatment can be provided and monitored by qualified staff.

How long do I have to go to the day hospital?

It varies depending on your needs. It’s generally for a period of 1-6 weeks but it can be extended if the team think you need longer treatment.

Who will see me?

You will be assigned a Key Worker when you are admitted. During your time at the day hospital you will be regularly reviewed by your psychiatrist. Other professionals on the multidisciplinary team may also become involved in your case, depending on your specific needs.

What will I do at the day hospital?

You will work individually with your Key Worker to develop a Care Plan. Your Key Worker will continuously assess your mental health and your response to prescribed treatment. You will also take part in a variety of groups including mental health education, relaxation, cognitive and healthy living groups.

What are the hours?

Times vary from area to area but, generally, day hospitals are open Monday to Friday. You will probably be asked to come in the morning and leave in the afternoon.

Is there a waiting list?

Some areas do have waiting lists but emergency appointments might still be available. Other areas do not have waiting lists.
