Gastroenterology and Hepatology National Clinical Programme

The National Clinical Programme for Gastroenterology and Hepatology (NCPG&H) was established in October 2019 as a joint collaboration between the HSE and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.  Working in partnership with patients, nursing, health and social care professionals and relevant stakeholders, the programme sets out to develop and design a patient-centred model of care, clinical pathways and guidelines for gastroenterology and hepatology services.

Aims and Objectives

Through innovative, efficient and evidence-based solutions we aim improve:

  •  the quality of patient care delivered to all HSE patients
  •  access to safe, appropriate services for patients
  •  value and cost-effectiveness for the patient and the healthcare system.

Reporting

The NCPG&H is led by Professor Colm O’Morain and reports to the National Clinical Advisor and Group Lead for Acute Operations, HSE. Multi-disciplinary working groups deliver the work of the programme. This work is overseen by a Clinical Advisory Group set up by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Gastroenterology and Hepatology multi-disciplinary teams provide expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of conditions of the digestive tract, liver and pancreas. This encompasses both acute conditions and a wide range of long-term conditions including digestive cancers, liver and pancreas disease, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease and functional gastro-intestinal bowel conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Gastroenterology and Hepatology departments provide a holistic approach for inpatient and outpatient care.

One in three patients presenting to Emergency Departments has gastrointestinal complaints. Every citizen is likely to consult with a Gastroenterologist at least once in their lifetime. The NCPG&H will set out to provide evidence-based, efficient, effective and equitable service for all the population.
