Home Care and Dementia

The National Office - Services for Older People and the National Dementia Office have collaborated on the development of an enhanced model of service delivery for Home Support clients with a mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or clients with Dementia. Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease characterised by a progressive loss of cognitive and functional abilities and social skills, often impinging on quality of life and the individual’s capacity for independent living. Dementia doesn’t take the same trajectory with everyone affected nor affect all individuals in the same way. Many who are newly diagnosed will function independently for quite a while with minimal input e.g. information and advice, while others may struggle from an early stage.
