Home Support Services

The Home Support Service (HSS), formerly called the Home Help Service or Home Care Package Scheme, helps you to continue living independently at home. The HSS provides you with support for everyday tasks including:

  • getting in and out of bed
  • dressing and undressing
  • personal care such as showering and shaving
  • taking medication

The kind of support you will receive will depend on your individual needs. These supports will be provided by us or by a funded external provider, approved by the HSE.

Who can apply

The HSS helps people aged 65 or over to do one of the following:

  • return home following a hospital stay
  • remain at home instead of going to hospital or a nursing home

People younger than 65 who have conditions that normally affect older people, such as dementia, disabilities or palliative care can apply for HSS.

HSS is free because it’s part of the public health service. You do not need a medical card to apply and your income will not be assessed.

You will have to pay for any extra support services that are not provided by the HSE or one of its approved providers.
