What we do

The Primary Care Speech and Language Therapy adult service in Dublin North West is committed to providing an effective, efficient, and timely intervention service for all clients. Our objective is to deliver an individualised person-centred Speech and Language Therapy service for service users and their families, to enable them to realise their full potential in terms of physical, emotional, and psychosocial well-being.

We are a team of senior and staff-grade therapists specialising in the assessment, diagnosis and management of adult acquired communication and eating/drinking/ swallowing difficulties.

These difficulties may result from the following conditions:

  •  Stroke
  •  Dementia
  •  Parkinsons disease
  •  Other Neurological Conditions
  •  Respiratory conditions
  •  Cancer
  •  Brain Injury

Who we see

We see adults who live in our catchment area of ‘Dublin North City & County – North West Dublin’. This area generally covers Dublin 7, Dublin 11 and Dublin 15.

We see a broad range of service users experiencing difficulties in the areas of speech, language, voice, fluency and swallowing aged 18 and above. Please contact us directly regarding our specific acceptance criteria.

Input can be either directly with the client or with the clients’ carers/family, depending on the specific individual needs of the person. The input may be given one-on-one or in a group-based setting. We also are involved in running a number of communication support groups in the area which are accessible to clients referred to the service.

In the case of swallowing difficulties, instrumental examinations (ie Videofluoroscopy, F.E.E.S) may be accessed by clients referred to the service and who have been assessed by one of our Speech and Language Therapists. These examinations are hospital-based and are completed following G.P. consent.

At present we do not provide domiciliary visits to Nursing Home residences, however, clients from these residences may be referred to the service if they can attend clinic-based appointments.

Making a Referral

All referrals should be on the Primary Care ‘PCT Referral Form’ and sent through the Central Referrals Office by email, fax or post.

You can get this form by printing from here PCT Referral Form, by calling into your local health centre, or by calling our admin support on 01 640 9265 to ask for a form.

An open referral system exists for communication input. Referrals for swallowing difficulties (Dysphagia) must be made by a medical, nursing or allied health professional. Referral forms must be filled out in full with all relevant information and reports included. Incomplete referrals will not be accepted and will be returned to the referral source.

Please Note: All clients must consent to a referral being made. Consent must be obtained verbally or in writing. Where a client is unable to consent, their next of kin must be notified that the referral has been made. Referrals made without documented consent will not be accepted and will be returned to the referral source.

Once referred, you will receive an appointment directly from the SLT team. Generally, most outpatient appointments are held in the Navan Road Primary Care Centre/Castleknock Health Facility. If for any reason you cannot attend the appointment, we request that clients give at least 24 hours' notice if they need to cancel an appointment. This can facilitate that the appointment may be offered to another patient on the waiting list. Clients who fail to attend appointments without giving prior notice may not be offered further appointments. If you have missed an appointment, please contact the clinic as soon as possible.

If you are running late for an appointment, please contact the clinic directly. Please note, if you arrive more than 15 minutes after your scheduled appointment time, it may not be possible to proceed with the appointment.
