Overview
Connolly Hospital is a major teaching and health promoting hospital providing a range of services to a diverse population covering the communities of West Dublin, North Kildare and South County Meath. These services include a 24 hour Emergency Department, acute medical and surgical services, acute psychiatric services, day care, out-patient care plus diagnostic and therapeutic and support services.
The unit comprises of 3 endoscopy rooms, a 16 bedded recovery unit and a newly upgraded decontamination and tracing facilities. There is an onsite IBD infusion service with specialist nurse support.
Our facilities include a capsule Endoscopy Room, consultation rooms, relative’s room, patient change/prep rooms, and a discharge lounge. The unit achieved JAG accreditation in 2019 and is a dedicated Bowel Screen centre delivering almost 500 screening colonoscopies annually.
Where to find us
Enter the main hospital Entrance. Take the stairwell or lift in the main concourse to level 4 and follow the signs for the Endoscopy department.
Parking is available for patients in the carparks in front of the main entrance. A ticket system is in operation. A patient set –down area and collection area is available at the main entrance. Post your visit you will be escorted down to the collection area by one of our endoscopy staff where you can be collected by a relative/friend.

Referral information
Connolly Hospital’s Endoscopy Unit has introduced the ‘Endoscopy E-Referral System’ via HealthLink. All GPs can now easily access and refer their patients electronically for Endoscopy (OGD, Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy/Left Colonoscopy) as well as HP Stool antigen test (and will receive a Consultant-based response/recommendation/outpatient appointment priority within 72 hours after Online Triage by our Consultant Gastroenterology Triage Team with Professor Richard Farrell, Dr. Claire Smyth, Dr. Orlaith Kelly and Dr. Barry Hall and Endoscopy Triage Nurse Vinu Narayanan. International Guidelines suggest that Upper GI Symptoms in patients less than 55 years of age with no alarm symptoms (dysphagia, anaemia, weight loss, bleeding) can be safely treated by PPI treatment and/or a Test and Treat for Helicobacter Pylori Infection. Stopping smoking, curbing caffeine/alcohol excess and weight reduction are also important in reducing acid reflux symptoms and PPI dependence.
We believe that our new triage pathway will make a significant improvement in the timely communication between Primary Care and our Endoscopy Department which performs over 6000 endoscopies, 1250 HP Stool antigen tests, 1000 venesections, 900 infusions and 5000 OPD appointments annually. We ask that from now on you kindly use the ‘Endoscopy E-Referral’ facility on HealthLink for referring patients for Endoscopy/HP Breath tests as well as routine OPD queries you may have where you want timely feedback or advice regarding patients with raised LFTs, high Ferritin levels, family history of GI malignancy, need for repeat/surveillance endoscopy etc.
