In order to ensure correct assessment of red cell and white cell morphology, it is very important that blood films sent to the laboratory are properly made.

  1. A  small drop of blood is placed in the centre line of a glass slide about 1-2 cms from one end.
  2. Taking another slide, making sure that its edge is smooth and clean, place it on the first slide at an angle of 40 degrees.
  3. Draw the spreader back to the drop of blood, which will run out to the edges and spread the film by pushing forward with a firm and even movement.
  4. The blood film should be 3-4 cms in length.
  5. Label the blood film with patients full name and D.O.B
  6. Allow the films to dry and then place in slide holders for transport to the laboratory.
