Enhancing Nursing Practice through Central Education Board Initiative

Enhancing Nursing Practice through a Central Education Board Initiative
L-R: Megan Carter, Staff Nurse; Brosna Ward, Claire Stuart, Resuscitation Training Officer; and Brendan Malone Acting Director or Nursing.

As part of the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore’s ongoing commitment to high-quality, evidence-based nursing care, a new quality improvement initiative has been launched to support real-time, on-ward education. This project centres around the introduction of a designated Education Board on each ward — a central hub for critical clinical updates, new and revised protocols, and essential nursing education.

Led by the MRHT Practice Development (PD) Team, this initiative allows for direct engagement with nursing staff through focused, real-time discussions. The board will provide a permanent, visual point of reference that staff can return to regularly for revision and reinforcement of key messages.

A new topic will be introduced each month, aligning with global awareness events such as World Delirium Awareness Day or International Sepsis Day, or spotlighting other vital areas of nursing care.

Beyond clinical updates, the board will also be used to share positive developments and achievements, helping to boost staff morale and reinforce a culture of continuous improvement.

Importantly, the Education Board is accessible to all healthcare professionals — including nursing, medical, domestic, and allied health teams — fostering a truly multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

Anticipated Outcomes:

  • Improved patient safety and quality of care through heightened staff awareness.
  • Greater efficiency in delivering on-ward education.
  • Increased familiarity with evolving protocols and procedures.
  • A sustainable, visible tool that supports ongoing professional development.

Going forward, the PD Team will ensure monthly updates keep the board relevant, while regular audits and staff feedback will guide its continued success. This initiative represents a significant step in promoting learning, collaboration, and excellence in care at the ward level.
