Diabetes and Oral Health

Oral manifestations of diabetes include: burning mouth syndrome, candidiasis, dental caries, gingivitis,neurosensory dysesthesias, periodontitis, salivary dysfunction, taste dysfunction and xerostomia. Therefore, good blood glucose control is important. In addition, daily brushing of teeth, flossing and regular dental check-ups are recommended.(1)          brushing teeth emoticon

The HSE provides the Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS) for medical card holders aged 16 and over. People with a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes are classed as high risk and are eligible for an expanded range of services.
