Faecal Occult Blood

  • Specimen Type: Faeces sample (usually 3 samples collected on 3 consecutive days) or Hema screen cards with faeces already added.

  • Other details: The patient should be informed to eat fibre rich foods for three days prior to commencing the test as well as during the test period e.g. vegetables, wholemeal bread, nuts etc. Red meat should be avoided, raw fruits and vegetables which contain peroxidase-like substances (turnips, broccoli, horseradish, cauliflower, cantaloupe, parsnips, red radish etc. should also be avoided. The test should be postponed in the event of diarrhoea or menstruation.
