  • Test Name: Xanthochromia
  • Laboratory: Biochemistry Referred Test (Referred to Kings College Hospital, London on advice of Neurology team only)
  • Specimen Type: CSF + Serum
  • Specimen Container: CSF (universal container) + Yellow Top (serum)
  • Specimen Volume: CSF (min 1ml required, ideally 4th CSF sample & light protected immediately) + 4mls serum
  • Specimen Requirements:
    • Available by special request for UHW Neurology team.
    • Please provide contact number on the request form for communication of critical results.
    • Sample must be taken >12hours post suspected SAH (may be useful up to 2 weeks post event)
    • Protect the sample from light immediately
    • A blood sample must be drawn at the same time for serum Total Bilirubin and Total Protein, which may be required for interpretation of CSF bilirubin,
    • Hand Deliver the samples to the Lab. Do not use the pneumatic tube system.
    • Inform the Biochemistry Lab prior to sample collection to organise.
    • Only available for UHW patients due to sample stability requirements. Liaise with local laboratory as required.
  • Other details:  Include a contact Number on the request form for communication of critical results.
  • Frequency of analysis/ assay:      
  • Turnaround Time: 3 weeks     
  • Phone alert limits: N/A      
  • Pre-analytical stability at room temp: Requires immediate delivery to Biochemistry by hand. Do not use pneumatic tube system.
