Curriculum for Making Every Contact Count

Curriculum Competency

This is a competency-based curriculum. On completion of undergraduate and graduate entry level healthcare training programmes it is required that healthcare students are competent healthcare professionals.  The national curriculum comprises of four units, building towards the development of competencies in delivering brief interventions for Making Every Contact Count.

The curriculum is divided into two sections.

Section 1: Lecture’s/Facilitator’s Guide

Presents a guide for educators on all aspects of the Curriculum inclusive of the:

  • Aims of the Curriculum and Curriculum Manual
  • Underlying philosophy of the Curriculum
  • Curriculum development processes.

Sub-sections are presented dealing with:

  • Implementing/integrating the Curriculum
  • Assessment of learning
  • Curriculum evaluation.

Section 2: Curriculum Content

Presents the learning content and outlines four units of study:

  • Unit 1-Health and Personal Wellness
  • Unit 2-Lifestyle Behaviours and Personal Responsibility for Health
  • Unit 3-Communicating for Healthy Lifestyles and Health Behaviour Change
  • Unit 4-Making Every Contact Count: Providing Opportunistic Brief Advice and Undertaking Brief Interventions

The Learning content permits easy interpretation and utility across HEIs irrespective of local resources. Each HEI can work with the learning materials as face-to-face lectures, online or blended approaches to delivery.

A variety of teaching strategies are employed:

  • Case studies
  • Discussions
  • Reflective exercises
  • Power point presentations
  • Reading
  • Skills based learning

Please note: Skills training for brief intervention must be face-to-face delivery.
